What is the Healthy Eating Promotion Law?
On October 26, 2021, Law 27.642, better known as “Ley de Etiquetado Frontal” (or the Front Labeling Law), was approved in the National Congress. It establishes that the processed and ultra-processed foods and drinks products with excessive added sugars, sodium, calories, total fat and/or saturated fat must have black octagons. The Law seeks to protect children from misleading advertising and to guarantee healthy school environments: the State must prioritize in its purchases stamp-free products for school lunchrooms and that school kiosks only offer products without octagons. This last point affects all levels of government purchasing, which has an impact on the nutritional quality of the products that reach the most vulnerable sectors of the population.
What is the issue we are addressing?
The OMS has identified Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) as the main threat to people’s health and the leading cause of death in the world: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes, among others. In Argentina, NCDs are responsible for 73.4% of the deaths, making them the leading cause of death in the country. One of the main causes of NCDs is poor alimentation, channeled in the excess consumption of critical nutrients such as sugars, calories, sodium, total fat and saturated fat. The term refers to the fact that they are avoidable and preventable, therefore, public policies are essential to ensure healthy habits such as proper nutrition, being one of the most important risk factors.
What did we do from Consciente Colectivo?

We want to understand the food culture of our country: what are the problems that affect us? What means do we have? What resources do we have at our disposition? But above all we want to know: what do we eat?
This project seeks to deepen our food culture as a country. We want to identify what problems exist and what initiatives, policies and projects can be promoted at a national level so we are closer and closer to those of us who live in Argentina, eat well.
